Macy's Column, March 2001

Well isn't it ages since I last wrote for you, my fans. I had such a good time over new year that I've only just recovered. But who cares, my private income sustains most of my needs.

People ask me 'what is it like living in such a trendy place as Clerkenwell?' and sometimes I am lost for words. Expensive comes to mind, but here are some quotations which I have gathered together to help explain the 'Clerkenwell genre'. Watch out for that in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

That sums it up in a little less OTT manner than this:

Clerkenwell, the district to define the decade, loft living at its best, with sophisticated bars and restaurants on every corner, as well as designers, architects, new media and internet companies

Quite the centre of dear Tony's Cool Britannia.

rapidly become known as Cool Clerkenwell.

The fashion for loft apartments crossed over from New York and found it's London spiritual home in this former run-down industrial area. And so, Clerkenwell was catapulted into the limelight as London's hippest area.

Inevitably property prices moved up and following this trend, the bars are increasingly smarter, catering to Clerkenwell creative types and investment bankers (who are the only ones who can now afford the "bohemian" loft lifestyle).

The Barbican complex stands as monument to the seventies love affair with the tower block, the Clerkenwell area a revitalised tribute to the nineties discovery of the loft...

Other London "hot spots" are Clerkenwell and the East End.

Even the FT has heard of us.

...in the heart of London's "Silicon Alley".  An area just north and east of the City of London covering Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Old Street and Clerkenwell.   It is supposed to have the highest concentration of new media businesses outside the USA.
